NEW DIVISION ALIGNMENTS

February 8, 2002

Yankees and Cyclones still do battle in same division

St. Petersburg, FL - The New York-Penn League has announced that there will be new divisional alignments for the 2002 season.

Instead of the two-division format used for the last few years, the league has split the 14 teams into three divisions.  The Pinckney Division represents west teams, the Stedler Division holds north teams, while the McNamara Division is compiled of east teams.  The McNamara Division consists of six teams, while the Pinckney and Stedler Division each have four teams competing for the top spot.

The Yankees will still compete in the McNamara Division with Brookyn, Hudson Valley and New Jersey.  They will be joined by Aberdeen and Williamsport.  Three of the four playoff teams from the 2001 season now compete in the same division.  Brooklyn finished with the best record in the league at 52-24, followed by Willimasport (48-26) and Staten Island (48-28).

Playoffs will consist of the top team from each division and one wild card with the best record among all second place teams.

June 18 marks the start of the 2002 season.  Staten Island will host the Brooklyn Cyclones at 7:05 p.m. for their home opener.
